Decommodification
Removing essential goods (housing, healthcare, food, education) from for-profit provision — the DSA’s operative policy doctrine, now being tested in NYC retail.
Definition
The principle that necessities should not be sold for profit: “We demand a complete decommodification of the systems that determine our health and well-being” (DSA SF Points of Unity). Distinct from redistribution — the goal is not subsidizing purchase within markets (SNAP, vouchers, housing benefits) but replacing market provision itself (public housing, Medicare for All as middleman-abolition, municipal groceries). This distinction is exactly what the grocery-store fight is about: economists nearly unanimously prefer the transfer approach; the DSA framework rejects it on principle.
Key Properties
- The concept that makes DSA policy legible as a program rather than a grab-bag: rent freeze, public housing, M4A, municipal groceries are all one move.
- Piker’s version: housing “should be treated as shelter, something that is necessary for survival,” not a speculative asset.
- The critique splits by register: efficiency (transfers dominate; Clark panel), calculation (state provision misallocates), and intent (state provision is designed to displace private provision — Barron’s inference).
