What Happened

Zohran Mamdani (Democratic) was elected Mayor of New York City with an outright majority — 50.78% (1,114,184 votes) — over Andrew Cuomo (41.32%, independent “Fight and Deliver” line, after losing the primary to Mamdani) and Republican Curtis Sliwa (7.01%). Turnout 43.47% (up 20 points from 2021), the highest for a NYC mayoral race since 1969; Mamdani was the first candidate since 1969 to clear one million votes, and carried all five boroughs (2025 New York City mayoral election (results record) — verify against NYC BOE certified canvass; WFP-line breakout unresolved).

Why It Matters

The movement’s biggest executive win; every debate page in the wiki routes through it. Interpretations divide: mandate for socialism (sympathetic media), anti-incumbent protest (Richard Wolff: “not voting for socialism… voting against what they’re living through”), or beachhead of entryism (right).
