2026 Florida Democratic Senate Primary (Nixon vs. Vindman)
Date: August 18, 2026 | Type: primary
What Happened
State Rep. Angie Nixon, a Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) member without the DSA’s national endorsement, won the Democratic nomination for Florida’s U.S. Senate special election over Alex Vindman, the retired Army lieutenant colonel and 2019 impeachment witness recruited by the DSCC. NBC projected the result on primary night. Vindman had raised more than $16 million to Nixon’s under $1 million, never debated her, and campaigned largely against the Republican, Sen. Ashley Moody. Official result: Nixon 705,835 (56.06%) to Vindman 553,138 (43.94%) on 1,258,973 ballots, a 12.1-point margin; statewide turnout 25.3% (3,389,929 of 13,417,844 registered, all parties); Nixon carried every large Democratic county except Palm Beach (Vindman 55.4%) and won her home county Duval with 80.2% (Florida Division of Elections — August 18, 2026 Primary Election Official Results (U.S. Senate, U.S. House District 25, turnout)). The Republican Senate primary the same day drew about 401,000 more ballots (1,660,013; Moody 79.6%). Nixon was endorsed by Reps. Maxwell Frost, Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar; the Democratic establishment (Schumer, DSCC chair Gillibrand, Vindman) endorsed her the same night. Moody won her primary easily. The two contest the final two years of Marco Rubio’s term on November 3, 2026 (Democratic socialist Angie Nixon scores upset in Florida's Democratic Senate primary, Moskowitz taunts Piker after primary win).

Why It Matters
Same state, same night, opposite outcomes: the DSA’s endorsed House candidate lost by 27 points while a non-endorsed DSA member won statewide. Readings on offer: (1) NBC’s and The Hill’s framing treats it as a genuine upset of a heavily funded establishment recruit, a second purple/red-state statewide nominee for the left after Abdul El-Sayed; (2) the confounds are large: Vindman did not engage (no debate), was a recent arrival to Florida, and the primary electorate is not the general electorate; (3) the endorsement question cuts both ways for the “open rose” argument on Is the DSA taking over the Democratic Party?: Nixon ran with the label and won, but without the national DSA machinery whose criteria Amid a democratic socialist surge, the DSA asks itself: What's next? puts on record. The general election is the first statewide test of the NRSC’s stated prediction that “Florida will never elect a socialist to the US Senate.” Israel is again the schism line: Nixon’s aid-cut position against a Jewish opponent in the state with the third-largest Jewish population, one week after Larkin’s anti-Zionist campaign lost in a quarter-Jewish district.
